Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a two-day visit to Kerala and Karnataka inaugurated two projects of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) worth INR 2,510 crore in the first week of September. The Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth around INR 3,800 crore in Mangaluru, including MRPL’s BS-VI upgradation project and sea water desalination plant, and also commissioned India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant at the Cochin Shipyard in Kochi.
The sea water desalination plant, set up at a cost of around ₹680 crore, will help reduce dependency on fresh water and ensure regular supply of hydrocarbons and petrochemicals throughout the year. Having a capacity of 30 million liters per day (MLD), the plant converts seawater into water required for the refinery processes.
